All new incoming first year students will get a new Dell laptop of the published model upon signing their <a href="https://legacy.berea.edu/iss/wp-content/uploads/sites/133/2023/07/Berea-College-EDGE-Agreement.pdf">college EDGE agreement</a>. (The laptop is often referred to as an EDGE laptop.) Students are to use their laptop while they are enrolled at Berea College and can then take the laptops upon graduation. Should a student withdraw prior to graduation, the laptop must be returned to the IT Department. If it is not returned, the cost of the laptop will be charged to the student's account. Students will pay for damages (plastics or screen, for example) or lost/stolen equipment (charger). Minor repairs covered by Dell warranty will be taken care of by the IT Department.

HOW TO GET CONNECTED

<ol start="1" type="1">
 	<li class="x_MsoListParagraph">Go to the wireless settings of your device and connect to the “MyResNet Start Here” network/SSID.</li>
 	<li class="x_MsoListParagraph">This will forward you to the Berea College Portal page (berea.apogee.us).</li>
 	<li class="x_MsoListParagraph">Use Berea College credentials to “Sign In” and create your account.</li>
 	<li class="x_MsoListParagraph">The next page will show you your Wifi Password or Pre-Shared Key (PSK). Copy this or write it down.</li>
 	<li class="x_MsoListParagraph">Go to the Wireless settings on your device and connect to the “MyResNet 5G” SSID.  (Only Select “MyResNet 2G” if 5G does not show up.)</li>
 	<li class="x_MsoListParagraph">Join the SSID with your WiFi password/PSK and click to auto-join this SSID.</li>
 	<li class="x_MsoListParagraph">To add more devices to the network, simply go to the wireless settings on each device and repeat steps 5 and 6 above.</li>
</ol>
If you connected originally via the “MyResnet Start Here” network/SSID, go to your device WiFi settings and choose to Forget that network.

As the student owner of the computer connected to the Network, you are responsible for the behavior of users on that computer and for all network traffic to and from the computer.
<ul>
 	<li>Do not change the name of your computer or workstation.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
 	<li>Do not modify or extend network services and wiring beyond the area of their intended use.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
 	<li>Do not use electronic mail and other network communications to harass, annoy, terrify, intimidate, threaten or bother another person.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
 	<li>Do not send forged emails, chain letters, ping bombs, SPAM or perform any act which will impair the operation of the college network.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
 	<li>Do not destroy or damage equipment, software, or data belonging to the college or to others.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
 	<li>Do not store/save items onto network server unless you are saving to your personal folder or to a designated course folder.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
 	<li>Do not spread or create computer viruses.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
 	<li>Do not attempt to break into the account of another user, either in the college, or on any other computer system.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
 	<li>Do not attempt to gain unauthorized access to private information.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
 	<li>Do not use computing resources for unauthorized monitoring of electronic communications.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
 	<li>Do not use an individual computer as a router to other networks to serve in any way as an electronic gateway to non-college affiliated systems without the written permission from Director of IS&amp;S. (If an additional server is to be added to a local area network that provides access to or from the network, permission must be granted by the Chief Information Officer).</li>
</ul>
<ul>
 	<li>Do not use computing resources of Berea College for personal or private commercial purposes or for financial gain.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
 	<li>Do not install software that is not properly licensed onto any computer. Berea College assumes no responsibility for the licensors or maintenance of software not owned by the college.</li>
</ul>
<ul>
 	<li>Do not attempt to circumvent system security or information protection schemes or uncover security loopholes, guess other passwords, access codes, or in anyway gain unauthorized access to local or network resources.</li>
</ul>
Persons in violation of Berea College Computer and Network policy are subject to the full range of sanctions, including the loss of computer or network access privileges, disciplinary action, dismissal from the college, and legal action.  Some violations may constitute criminal offenses, as outlined by local, state, and federal laws. If users have questions as to whether a particular action is acceptable, they should visit or call the Helpdesk for answers.

Avoiding Policy Violations

Congratulations on your upcoming graduation!  Below you will find some important information concerning your Berea College-issued laptop and network accounts that you need to be aware of prior to graduation.

Upon completion of your degree at Berea College, your Berea-issued laptop will become yours. At that time, Berea College is no longer responsible for the maintenance and repair of the laptop. Prior to graduation, you should bring the machine in for any repairs you may need. Here are some important deadlines and dates concerning this process:
<ul>
 	<li>Battery Replacement
The deadline to have your battery tested for replacement per your EDGE agreement is Thursday, March 28.  Please note, battery replacements are for battery issues that fall under our guidelines and each battery will be put through the proper diagnostic test to determine if a replacement is needed. Notable issues that determine if your battery needs to be replaced are:
<ol>
 	<li>Less than 1/2 hour running time</li>
 	<li>Physically damaged units with exposed cells</li>
 	<li>Windows battery warning
Also, batteries are stocked on a limited basis and are first come first served. Additional batteries are ordered as needed. In the event that the replacement battery does not arrive prior to Commencement, it is your responsibility to arrange to pick up the battery from the IT Department. We will not ship any batteries.</li>
</ol>
</li>
 	<li>Last Day to Submit Repair Requests
Any service for hardware/software issues for your laptop should be submitted by Thursday, March 28 since many services may require replacement parts to be ordered or take longer for diagnostic testing. This will ensure adequate time for us to get the repair completed prior to your graduation. In the event that a repair will extend beyond the end of the semester, the user is responsible to make arrangements to pick up the computer upon completion of the repair.</li>
</ul>

Graduating Senior Information

How to login to your new Berea College Alumni email account
No later than June 15, your student email account will be converted to an alumni account.  
<ol>
 	<li>Open a browser and go to outlook.com</li>
 	<li>Sign in using: <a href="mailto:yourusername@bereaalumni.org">yourusername@bereaalumni.org</a>  then the password to your account</li>
</ol>
STOP!  DO NOT PROCEED WITH THE FOLLOWING until your Berea College Alumni email account has been created and you have graduated.

Laptop Reimaging Steps

* This process will delete all personal data. Please backup any data before starting this process.  Instructions are below. *

To make a backup, please read the following section. You will need an external hard drive, USB flash drive, or cloud storage such as Google Drive, Dropbox, etc.
<ol>
 	<li>Turn on your laptop.</li>
 	<li>Search for and open File Explorer.</li>
 	<li>Open "Windows (C:)" &gt; Users &gt; find your username. This folder contains your data.</li>
 	<li>Choose the folders and files you need to backup, then move them to your backup location. Common folders include Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Favorites, Pictures, Music, and Videos.</li>
</ol>
Please follow the steps below to convert your college provided laptop into a personal device.

Retrieve the Windows 10 License

In the event that you need the license key, please save this to your backup location.
<ol>
 	<li>While logged into your computer, search for and open Command Prompt.</li>
 	<li>Once Command Prompt is open, type the following and press Enter:    wmic path softwarelicensingservice get OA3xOriginalProductKey
<ol>
 	<li>Note: The "OA3x" portion uses the letter O, not the number zero.</li>
</ol>
</li>
 	<li>This will display your 25-character Windows product key. Please make note of this key and save it to your backup location.</li>
</ol>

Reset the Windows 10 Installation
<ol>
 	<li>Plug your charger into the laptop and turn it on.</li>
 	<li>Search for and open Reset this PC. (Or go to Start &gt; Settings &gt; Update &amp; Security &gt; Recovery tab)</li>
 	<li>Choose Get started. A Reset this PC window will open.</li>
 	<li>Choose the Remove everything option to remove all personal files.</li>
 	<li>Choose Local Reinstall.</li>
 	<li>Continue through the prompts and click Reset.</li>
 	<li>Your laptop will reinstall Windows 10 automatically and restart a few times.</li>
</ol>
When finished, it will come to an initial setup screen with multiple prompts. You may setup the laptop however you like at this point.
<h2>Troubleshooting</h2>
Problem 1: Could not find the recovery environment

Follow these steps if you receive a screen with the above message shown when trying to reset:
<ol>
 	<li>Search for Command Prompt, right click it and choose Run as Administrator</li>
 	<li>Type the following and press enter:  reagentc /enable</li>
</ol>

Problem 2: Windows 10 is not activated
<ol>
 	<li>Connect to the internet via WIFI or LAN.</li>
 	<li>Search for and open Activation settings (Or go to Start &gt; Settings &gt; Update &amp; Security &gt; Activation tab)</li>
 	<li>Choose Change product key.</li>
 	<li>Enter the product key you stored from the earlier steps.</li>
 	<li>Click Next and allow the prompt to complete.</li>
</ol>
