Growing Berea: Expanding Outdoor Spaces on Campus

Growing Berea: Expanding Outdoor Spaces on Campus

Since her arrival two years ago, President Cheryl Nixon has implemented a number of initiatives based on feedback from Berea’s most important constituency—its students. New outdoor spaces have been added for students, staff, and faculty to enjoy. As one of the “Students First” initiatives, this project aims to foster community and encourage Bereans to connect with each other in meaningful ways. So far, ideas implemented by Student Vision teams include a bonfire pit in Alumni Field, a study and social patio space in front of Hutchins Library, shaded seating just outside the dining hall, and ample opportunities for outdoor lounging, such as hammocks and Adirondack chairs.

Students at Berea College thrive in the College’s abundant outdoor spaces. Agriculture student Liz Stokes ’25 remarked, “As an outdoor trip leader at Berea College, I am thankful to have access to green spaces all over campus, whether on the quad or in Brushy Fork.” Liz worked for Outdoor Adventures, a Campus Life program that invites students to participate in nature-centered activities such as rock climbing, horseback riding, camping, and hiking. Outdoor trip leaders like Liz help organize these events, often coordinating with Campus Life program areas and outside companies to make them possible. Liz also noted how the new spaces have had a positive impact on her and her friends’ experiences, as they “encourage creativity and support mindfulness” within the community.

K-Lord ’27 from one of the Student Vision teams explained that when creating the space outside of Hutchins, they had to think about how to work with nature, which enabled them to utilize an unused area to create a patio. “Students have a place where they can immerse themselves in nature. I’ve never truly seen so many people using the outside spaces and it gives me a sense of fulfillment knowing I was able to elevate a community that does so much for me.” Student Vision teams are created and led by students, making them an essential resource for those who have ideas to improve community living but don’t know how to implement them.

Brad Stepp, Counseling Services Director at Berea College, says that some may be surprised at the powerful impact something as simple as outdoor seating can have for students dealing with the stress of academic rigor.

Faculty instructors like Jesse Montgomery, a visiting Professor of English and native Berean who joined the College during the pandemic, often make use of outdoor gathering spaces on the quad as a place to hold class. “When you’re teaching and the energy dips or things feel stale,” Montgomery says, “a trip to the outdoor classroom can provide a lovely little change of pace. Sometimes a short walk and a change of scenery is enough to renew our conversation.”

The addition of new outdoor spaces on campus reflects Berea’s commitment to fostering both connection and academic exploration. They provide opportunities for hands-on learning, quiet reflection, and social gathering. By integrating these new spots into campus life, Berea ensures that its community continues to grow in fellowship and curiosity.
