For people who’ve never been to Berea, it can be difficult to imagine how a college could provide its students with such a seamless, supportive, and transformative higher education experience. In fact, many students have said they thought Berea College had to be a scam until they visited and saw it for themselves. That’s why, every year, a delegation of Berea students visits Washington, D.C., to meet with elected representatives and government officials.

For prospective students nervous about leaving home and entering the unfamiliar atmosphere of higher education—or those still not sure if Berea is right for them—a personal connection with a current student can make all the difference. That’s where Berea’s Student Ambassadors come in—an important job on campus.

Nestled within the rolling hills of Appalachia, Berea College’s Forest has long been a treasured resource for students, alumni, visitors, and community members alike. This fall, it’s set to become an even more immersive, educational experience that bridges history, sustainability, and public engagement.

Since her arrival two years ago, President Cheryl Nixon has implemented a number of initiatives based on feedback from Berea’s most important constituency—its students. New outdoor spaces have been added for students, staff, and faculty to enjoy. As one of the “Students First” initiatives, this project aims to foster community and encourage Bereans to connect with each other in meaningful ways. So far, ideas implemented by Student Vision teams include a bonfire pit in Alumni Field, a study and social patio space in front of Hutchins Library, shaded seating just outside the dining hall, and ample opportunities for outdoor lounging, such as hammocks and Adirondack chairs.
