For people who’ve never been to Berea, it can be difficult to imagine how a college could provide its students with such a seamless, supportive, and transformative higher education experience. In fact, many students have said they thought Berea College had to be a scam until they visited and saw it for themselves. That’s why, every year, a delegation of Berea students visits Washington, D.C., to meet with elected representatives and government officials.

For prospective students nervous about leaving home and entering the unfamiliar atmosphere of higher education—or those still not sure if Berea is right for them—a personal connection with a current student can make all the difference. That’s where Berea’s Student Ambassadors come in—an important job on campus.

What do you think of when you picture a library? Chances are, you imagine a building filled with books of all kinds and staffed by smart, helpful people ready to point you in the right direction. Berea College’s Hutchins Library certainly fits that description but also offers a host of services that may not immediately come to mind when you think about libraries.

A key issue facing Appalachia today is the gap in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education between this region, especially its more rural counties, and the rest of the country. Because of its commitment to serving Appalachia and helping it to thrive, Berea College is working to close this gap. One of the ways Berea is encouraging STEM education in the region is by cultivating the engineering talents of Appalachian youth through competitive robotics.
