Life-Threatening Situations
In any life-threatening situation, such as a suicide attempt, alcohol or drug overdose, or serious mental health crisis, call 911 or proceed immediately to the Berea Hospital [CHI Saint Joseph Health] Emergency Room located at 301 Estill Street. You can also contact the hospital at 859-986-3151. Notify Public Safety at 859-985-3333 when able to do so.
The 4 R’s of Responding to a Student in Crisis
Breathe! If there is evidence of a medical emergency (pills consumed or other physical harm), call 911. Otherwise, stay calm and take your time. Provide a safe and private space for the student. Then–help the student determine their immediate needs (medical attention, counseling, staying with a friend).
Therapist On-Call
If Counseling Services is closed and you are experiencing a mental health crisis, you can contact Public Safety at 859-985-3333 to request to speak to the on-call therapist. Public Safety will take your name and phone number and have a therapist call you back. The on-call therapist will provide crisis intervention, including assessing risk to self and others and coping skills to stabilize and determine the level of care needed.
Urgent Appointments
If you or a fellow student are not in imminent danger of physically harming yourself or others, please contact Counseling Services to determine the next steps for you or the student to be seen. During normal business hours, please call 895-985-3212 or walk in to be seen.
If it is after hours, on weekends, or on holidays, please call Public Safety at 859-985-3333 to request to speak to the on-call therapist.
