BEREA, Ky. – Berea College and the City of Berea have renewed a long-standing collaboration allowing the city to continue using certain College property—at no charge—for community parks.
“At Berea College, we are proud to partner with the City of Berea in support of these vibrant public spaces,” said Berea College President Cheryl L. Nixon. “Renewal of these lease agreements reflects our shared values and deep commitment to serve the community. We look forward to continuing this strong relationship in the years ahead.”
“The long-term renewal of the lease for Memorial Park and the Berea Park Expansion is reflective of the cooperative relationship between the College and the city over our town’s history,” said Berea Mayor Bruce Fraley. “There is a strong commitment by both parties to improving the quality of life for our citizens and making our community an attractive and enjoyable place to visit. We look forward to continuing to expand and improve recreational opportunities in these parks for many years to come.”
The new agreements extend two leases, the first for a 22.5-acre site where part of the Berea City Park is located near Berea Community School off Ellipse Street. The park currently includes t-ball, baseball, softball and football fields, along with playgrounds, picnic shelters (with grills and restroom facilities), volleyball courts, horseshoe pits, a pool, splashpad and more. These facilities have been developed by the City of Berea through the actions and support of the Berea City Council.
Berea College and the City of Berea originally entered into an agreement regarding the use of this land in 1999. The new agreement extends this lease through May 21, 2050.
The second agreement extends a lease for the City of Berea’s Memorial Park on Jefferson Street. Memorial Park is Berea’s original city park and is dedicated to those who gave their lives while serving our country.
Berea Memorial Park has two playgrounds, two picnic shelters, restrooms and more.
This lease was first entered into in 1972. The new agreement extends this lease through May 21, 2050.
