Berea College Celebration of Traditional Music offers music, activities and more

BEREA, Ky. – The 52nd annual Berea College Celebration of Traditional Music (CTM) – a celebration of homemade music as passed on from person to person in Appalachia – will take place Oct. 9-12 on the Berea College campus. 

Performers include The Ebony Hillbillies, masters of black string-band music and blues, who will perform at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 9. The performance is part of the Stephenson Memorial Concert series, honoring former Berea College President John B. Stephenson. The performance will take place in the Phelps Stokes Chapel.

In addition to musical performances, Richard Underwood will present a symposium as part of Saturday’s Dinner on the Grounds, speaking on his book CrimeSong with ballads performed by Liza DiSavino. 

A Kidzone will be available Saturday, Oct. 10, with music and activities by Lili Shelton.

Other events will take place across campus include dancing, musical jam sessions, workshops and lectures.

All events are free to students. Daytime events are free to all. The Saturday evening concert in Grey Auditorium is $10. The Saturday evening dance at Woods Penn Commons is $8. 

CTM is sponsored by the L. Allen Smith Memorial Fund, directed by Elizabeth DiSavino, and is planned and presented by the Loyal Jones Appalachian Center, the CTM Committee, the Berea College Music Department and the students of the Berea College Folk-Roots Ensemble.
