Charles Booker to speak at Berea College convocation

BEREA, Ky. – Kentuckian Charles Booker will present Berea College’s Appalachian Lecture Thursday, at one of the College’s weekly convocations co-sponsored by the Loyal Jones Appalachian Center. 

 The convocation begins at 3 p.m. in Phelps Stokes Chapel. 

 Booker will reflect on the impact of racial, economic and political divisions in Kentucky and the United States. The discussion will include his views on ending poverty, strengthening democracy and uplifting humanity. 

 “I want the students to see that they, too, are capable of being part of the political process that is so often doubted,” said Chris Green, director of the Loyal Jones Appalachian Center. “Booker’s story is a powerful one to any Berea College student. He didn’t come from wealth, yet he’s making a difference.”

 Booker’s book, “From the Hood to the Holler: A Story of Separate Worlds, Shared Dreams, and the Fight for America’s Future,” will be sold at the event. Students and guests will have the chance to get the book signed after the talk.

 Born and raised in Louisville, Kentucky, during his young years, Booker experienced poverty and homelessness firsthand. His early life experiences inspired him to become the first person in his family to graduate from law school and pursue a career as the voice of the people. 

In 2007, Booker earned a bachelor’s degree in political science. He continued his academic career and earned his Juris Doctorate from the University of Louisville in 2010. 

Throughout his career, Booker has worked as an education and equity policy analyst with the Louisville Urban League, manager of Neighborhood Initiatives with the Louisville Independent Business Alliance, director of development of 1619 Flux and division director of administrative services with the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources. He also has dedicated his time to clubs and committees such as the Louisville Metro Democratic Club, House Natural Resources and Energy Committee, Economic Development and Workforce Investment Committee and House Judiciary Committee.

This convocation is free and open to the public.
