Berea College Launches “Financial Freedom Pledge,” Creating a Fully Funded Degree

BEREA, Ky. – Berea College is revolutionizing the economics of higher education through its Financial Freedom Pledge, a bold commitment that will provide every enrolled student with a fully funded degree beginning in Fall 2027. The comprehensive initiative guarantees 100 percent of tuition, housing, food and fees without loans, allowing students to pursue their education without financial barriers.
“Every student arrives at Berea with gifts: talent, curiosity, determination, creativity, a desire to serve and dreams for the future,” said President Cheryl L. Nixon. “Our commitment is simple: When students bring us their gifts, Berea invests in their potential. The real value isn't measured in what students save. It's measured in the freedom they'll have to dream, explore and become.”
Under the initiative, Berea College will become the first college in the country to exclusively admit students with unlimited potential and limited resources while providing every student with a fully funded, comprehensive, no-loan degree. Rooted in access, affordability and opportunity, the Financial Freedom Pledge builds upon Berea's longstanding mission by ensuring talent — not income — determines opportunity.
“At a time when many are questioning the value of higher education, we are reimagining our public good by investing even more resources and supports to ensure Berea students enroll, persist, graduate and thrive,” President Nixon noted. “I want to thank the College’s visionary board for supporting an initiative that focuses on our mission and our students’ success.”
The announcement represents the next chapter in Berea's legacy of bold ideas. In 1892, Berea College stopped charging tuition, ensuring students would not be held back from their educational dreams because of cost. As the nation's oldest continuously tuition-free college, Berea is now expanding that commitment to fund tuition, housing, food and fees for every student.
“At Berea, higher education is not about economics — it is about experiences,” President Nixon said. “It is not about term bills — it is about transformation. It is not about costs — it is about community. It is about our enduring commitment to every student and the future they imagine for themselves.”

In addition to covering direct educational costs, Berea supports students with books and supplies, its nationally recognized Work College Program, a free laptop, funded internships, study-away opportunities, professional clothing support, conference funding and wellness resources — creating a comprehensive investment in every student's success.
The Financial Freedom Pledge currently represents an estimated value of more than $285,000 over four years. Unlike traditional financial aid models that often leave students navigating loans and financial uncertainty, Berea's approach provides clarity, confidence and opportunity from day one.
“At Berea, we don't just award financial aid — we offer financial freedom,” said Luke Hodson, senior associate vice president of Admissions and Financial Aid. “Students are free to choose a major because they love it, free to focus on learning instead of debt, free to pursue internships, research, leadership, service and graduate study and free to dream boldly about their future.”
