Life Insurance Benefits
Life insurance is a fundamental component of financial planning, designed to provide crucial support for your loved ones in
the event of your death. Berea College provides two distinct layers of coverage for your peace of mind: Basic (Employer-
Paid) and Voluntary (Employee-Paid).
Basic Life and AD&D Insurance (Employer-Paid)
To help ensure a financial foundation for your family, the College provides and pays for a Basic Life and Accidental Death &
Dismemberment (AD&D) policy for every eligible employee.
A Note on Age: Benefit reductions begin to apply when an employee reaches age 65. If you plan to work past this age, please
consult with Human Resources to understand how this may affect your policy amount.
Voluntary Life and AD&D Insurance (Supplemental Coverage)
For employees who want to provide a higher level of financial security for their families, we offer a supplemental Voluntary
Life and AD&D policy through TransAmerica.
Guaranteed Enrollment Window
If you are a newly hired employee, you have a special right to purchase a certain level of coverage regardless of any health
issue or medical concern (this is called “Guaranteed Issue”).
Please Note: If you choose not to enroll in the Voluntary Life plan during your New Hire window, and you decide to purchase
it later, you will likely be required to submit Evidence of Medical Insurability to TransAmerica. The insurance carrier may or
may not grant you access to the policy at that time.
For a detailed breakdown of coverage levels and premium costs, please refer to the Employee Benefits Overview (EBO)
document or your official insurance plan booklet, or your Bswift Library.
