Early Childhood Care & the CDL

Early Childhood Care & the CDL

The Child Development Lab (CDL) is a premier early childhood environment located right here on the Berea College campus. While many staff members utilize the CDL for their childcare needs, it is important to understand the unique mission of this facility and how it differs from traditional community childcare.

A Teaching Laboratory First

The CDL exists primarily as a learning facility for Berea College students. Much like a chemistry lab or a computer lab, the CDL is subsidized by the College to provide a space where students can study child development, education, and psychology in a real-world setting.

Because the CDL is a laboratory, enrollment is structured to ensure a consistent environment for student research and observation. Families who enroll are entering into a partnership that supports the academic mission of the College.
