Artwork by Mina T. Day

This piece reflects the opioid epidemic in Eastern Kentucky and the way addiction can change a person in an instant. The work is personal to me and explores how substance abuse affects families, especially children. Through deformed imagery, layered text, and low color contrast, I wanted to show how someone you love can become unrecognizable and how quickly addiction can shift a home from safety to fear. As someone from eastern Kentucky, this issue is not abstract to me. The opioid crisis has deeply affected our region, Eastern Kentucky, and this piece reflects both my lived experience and my commitment to telling Appalachian stories through my art
