About Writing Resources
Writing Resources serves as Berea College’s writing center. It assists students, faculty, and staff with all types of writing at any stage of the writing process. Consultants can assist in understanding assignments, brainstorming, organization, flow, language mechanics, and APA, MLA, and Chicago style formatting, and citation. From personal writing to lab reports, trained student writing consultants can help work past your writing concerns and questions. Our consultants work at the Center for Teaching and Learning as part of the student labor program at the College. They are trained to assist Berea students in writing as well as all other forms of communication. Consultants must complete a quarter-credit course during their first semester and complete ongoing training throughout their time with Writing Resources.
What to Expect, How to Prepare
Live (in-person or video) consultations are 50 minutes long and begin at the top of the hour. Students can make up to three appointments per week. Your consultant will greet you, ask about the assignment, and set goals with you for the session. If possible, bring your assignment sheet. Our consultants will not “just edit” the paper for you. Instead, they will ask questions, listen, and speak with you about why you made the choices you did to help you improve as a writer, so you will need to be physically and mentally present for these consultations. Our Paper Upload consultations are 50 minutes long, but you will not need to be present; instead, the consultant will provide written comments that they will upload back to your appointment form after the session time is over. Please see our “How to Prepare” guide for more details.
Need some help with your paper, but don’t have time to visit the center? You may access our library of Tipsheets for writing below.
