(NEW!) Community and Civic Engagement Minor

Community and Civic Engagement Minor

What is a Community and Civic Engagement Minor?

The Community and Civic Engagement minor equips students with knowledge and skills useful for applying their disciplinary knowledge to contemporary issues in community settings. It is designed to be interdisciplinary and to draw students from diverse academic departments. As students advance through the disciplinary training of their major, the program offers a structured opportunity to participate in sustained community engagement related to their major, practice civic engagement skills, reflect on the relationship between applied and academic coursework, and become familiar with the opportunities and challenges of community-engaged work. It also provides an opportunity for cohorts of students to learn from the diverse disciplinary perspectives of their peers and appreciate the different perspectives disciplines bring to complex decision-making and problem-solving in communities.

I jumped at the opportunity to minor in Community and Civic Engagement because it mirrors many of my career and personal goals, through its emphasis on engaging with various communities through organization and service. At its heart, CCE teaches students strategies for empowering people and communities to interact with larger structures impacting their daily life through Civic Literacy and Civic Skills. The minor allows space for each student to focus on their individual interests, which gave me the opportunity to apply my previous involvement and coursework.

The minor in Community and Civic Engagement is exciting to me because it supports students in developing skills and knowledge that will help them use what they're learning in their major to amplify strengths and respond to needs in the communities where they live. It also embodies the spirit of the liberal arts by encouraging students to make connections across a wide range of disciplines and their relevance to everyday public life.
