Introducing Rev. Jonathan R. Whitfield, a dynamic preacher, speaker, and chaplain with a heart for service and a passion for empowering others. A native of Bennettsville, South Carolina, Reverend Whitfield’s journey has been defined by a steadfast commitment to ministry, social justice, and the spiritual growth of others.
Reverend Whitfield began his academic journey at South Carolina State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Digital Media Studio Arts in 2010. During this time, he served as a student chaplain, offering spiritual guidance and fostering a sense of community among the student body. His calling to ministry deepened, leading him to pursue a Master of Divinity in Theology and Pastoral Care & Counseling at the Charles H. Mason Theological Seminary at the Interdenominational Theological Center (ITC) in Atlanta, Georgia, where he graduated in 2011.
In 2016, Reverend Whitfield co-founded a missions society and co-led a life-changing missions trip to Haiti, underscoring his commitment to humanitarian efforts and global outreach. He also served as a chaplain for HUGS Homeless Ministries in Atlanta, providing compassionate care to those facing hardship.
In 2017, Reverend Whitfield ran for Atlanta City Council with the inspiring motto, "Invest In The People." His visionary platform challenged a 20-year incumbent and brought fresh energy and advocacy to the forefront. That same year, he was licensed as a minister at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church in Atlanta, GA, and in 2019, he was ordained as an Elder in the Church of God In Christ (COGIC) in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Most recently, Reverend Whitfield completed a year-long Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) program at Prisma Health Greenville Memorial Hospital in Greenville, South Carolina, further honing his skills in spiritual care. He is now preparing to pursue Board Certified Chaplain (BCC) certification. In 2024, he was honored as a South Carolina State University 40 Under 40 Inductee for the 2023 class of distinguished alumni, recognized as a dynamic leader making a meaningful impact in his community.
Today, Reverend Whitfield serves as the Chapel and Ecumenical Chaplain at Berea College, where he is dedicated to fostering spiritual growth and holistic development among young adults. Passionate about this role, Rev. Whitfield views it as both a duty and a privilege to help shape the next generation of emerging adults. He believes in the transformative power of faith and education during this pivotal stage of life and is committed to walking alongside students as they discover their purpose and potential.
