Berea College

Professor <a href="https://www.berea.edu/academics/departments-programs/asian-studies/faculty-staff/dr-jeffery-l-richey">Jeff Richey</a>, who is on sabbatical leave during the 2023-24 academic year, has been awarded a <a href="https://www.associatedkyotoprogram.org/visiting-faculty-fellowships/">Visiting Faculty Fellowship</a> by the <a href="https://www.associatedkyotoprogram.org/about/">Associated Kyoto Program</a> based at <a href="https://www.doshisha.ac.jp/en/">Dōshisha University</a> in Kyōto, Japan.  In spring 2024, he will teach a course at Dōshisha on “<a href="https://www.japanpitt.pitt.edu/timeline/nara-period-710-794">Nara Period Japan</a>” and conduct research on the 8<sup>th</sup> century empress who ruled Japan twice, under the names Kōken 孝謙 and Shōtoku 称徳, and was the last woman to wield real imperial power in Japanese history.
