Ceramic Apprenticeship Program
A fusion of the Berea College Art Department and the Student Craft Industries, it has as its mission the education of student apprentices in the practice of studio production pottery. Students may combine labor and academic studies to achieve their individual educational and career objectives.
Student apprentices work with the Program Director and a Resident Potter. The Director teaches most of the academic courses. The Resident Potter is a full-time studio potter experienced in the subtleties of a working pottery.
The facilities for ceramics at Berea College are extraordinary. Each apprentice has adequate personal storage space for production and work. Equipment and technical support are available for throwing, handbuilding, mold making and extrusion. Eight kilns are available to support earthenware, raku, stoneware, salt and wood firing.
