Biography

Dr. Andrea Woodward received a B.A. in International Relations from Bethel College in 1998, an M.A. in International Development and Education from the University of Minnesota in 2001, an M.S. in Development Sociology from Cornell University in 2007, and a Ph.D. in Development Sociology in 2011. She worked as an Information Specialist for the Corporation for National Service’s National Service-Learning Clearinghouse from 1999-2001 and was a community health and AIDS prevention volunteer with the Peace Corps in Togo, West Africa from 2001-2003. It was through her work at the Clearinghouse that Dr. Woodward first learned about Berea College’s unique model of higher education, so she was particularly thrilled to join the faculty in 2011 after ten years of hoping to one day teach here.

Dr. Woodward’s research interests include the global food system, school food reform, development, inequality, and social change. Courses taught at Berea include Sociology of Everyday Life, Social Stratification and Inequality, Food, Culture and Identity in Appalachia, Sociology of Development and Social Change, and Community Resources for Families.
