BeCARE Program

BeCARE Program

The BeCARE Program is a labor position in the Department of Nursing. The position allows a supportive environment integrating theoretical knowledge, applied nursing skills, and monitoring students’ mastery of soft skills in professional, empathetic communications. This employment during college helps contribute to student success. Meaningful connections between learning in the classroom and learning on the job are made evident as noted by Iowa GROWS, 2024. Our Nursing Department has established a labor position to accelerate development of interprofessional communication and team building competencies among sophomore nursing students working as nurse aides in a local clinical setting as their college labor position.

Our Berea College Nursing Students are from diverse backgrounds and regions. A common element they all have is the financial need and limited income required for a college education.

The BeCARE program was inspired by an article in:

Titled: A Healthcare-Academic Practice Partnership Program to Promote Student Nurse Readiness for Work

The BeCare program helped me become more comfortable with being in the hospital and taking care of patients. While clinical experiences as a student nurse sometimes made me feel uncertain, my role as a PCT instilled a strong sense of belonging, boosting my confidence, comfort, and proactive approach to patient care.

Working in a hospital setting helped me develop time management, communication, and nurse aid skills. I’ve been able to see real medical procedures and watch the healthcare team work to help a patient, making it easier to grasp concepts in my nursing classes.
|
Some valuable lessons I’ve learned at the hospital that I will carry into my nursing practice include small yet meaningful gestures, such as wrapping a heated blanket around a patient rather than simply placing it on them. Additionally, I have gained a clearer understanding of the distinct roles of a patient care assistant and a registered nurse, as well as the importance of collaboration between the two.
