Joseph Kaplan is a Visiting Assistant Professor of African American History at Berea College. He completed his dissertation “We at War: The Bureau of Special Services and the Surveillance of New York’s Black Left During the Era of the Urban Rebellions,” at Rutgers University in 2024. He has published for H-Net, as well as the CUNY Gotham Center, and his work has been supported by grants from the Andrew Mellon Foundation, the New York State Archives, and the New York Public Library, where he currently holds the Diamonstein-Spielvogel research Fellowship. He is currently workshopping his dissertation manuscript while working on an article about Black countersubversive law enforcement officials. In his spare time, he enjoys hiking and exploring the Appalachian backcountry.
