Education Studies
Graduates receive a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Education Studies. Education Studies majors may either seek a general curriculum in education studies or a certification curriculum designed for students wishing to become K-12 classroom teachers.
Students interested in classroom teaching choose from the following programs:
- Elementary education
- Middle grades education
- Secondary education in English, mathematics, social studies, biology, chemistry or physics
- Music education with vocal and/or instrumental emphases
- Physical education and health
Seeking teacher certification requires meeting academic and professional criteria at designated checkpoints in the Teacher
Education Program. The program concludes with a professional term of Student Teaching in the 9th semester.
Opportunities & Internships
Students have opportunities to:
- Observe teaching and interact with K-12 students and teachers in different communities
- Participate in independent study and research projects supervised by faculty
- Attend and present at conferences
- Engage in culturally diverse experiences such as study abroad and internships
Careers & Outcomes
Education Studies graduates find employment in a wide variety of educational settings and/or pursue studies at the graduate level. Graduates are working in:
- Local and international schools as teachers, counselors and administrators
- After school programming
- Peace Corps
- Child and youth organizations
- Non-profit agencies
- Adult education organizations
- Private tutoring agencies
- Museum education and libraries
- Colleges and universities
The Berea College Education Department has been unwavering in its efforts towards preparing students to be excellent educators. I have been blessed to have such a committed group of professors. The journey has been nothing less than wonderful.
