Dervish to Perform at Berea College’s Stephenson Memorial Concert

Dervish, acclaimed as one of the biggest names in Irish music internationally, will perform at Berea College’s Stephenson Memorial concert on Thursday Mar. 14 at 8 p.m. in Phelps Stokes Chapel.

Described as “an icon of Irish music” by the BBC and “the most soulful Irish traditional folk band playing today,” by Irish journalist and broadcaster Stuart Bailie, Dervish has played at festivals from Rio to Glastonbury. They come to Berea just in time to set the mood for St. Patrick’s Day.

Berea College Joins with Other Colleges and Universities in Choral-Orchestral Performance

Five musical ensembles from three Kentucky regional colleges and universities will join the Berea College Concert Choir in a collaborative performance Nov. 3 and 4. The concert in Berea will take place Sunday, Nov. 4 at 3 p.m., at Union Church. An identical program will be performed on the main stage at Norton Center in Danville at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday evening, Nov. 3. Both concerts are free to the public. The Omer Quartet will perform classical music Thursday, Oct. 4 at 8 p.m. in Phelps Stokes Chapel, at the Berea College Stephenson Memorial Concert Series.

The Omer Quartet is distinctive among today’s young string quartets. The quartet, which took first prize in the 2017 Young Concert Artists International Auditions, consists of Mason Yu and Erica Tursi (violinists), Jinsun Hong (viola) and Alex Cox (cello). Brian Owens to Sing The Soul of Ferguson

Brian OwensSoul singer Brian Owens will perform “The Soul of Ferguson” at the Berea College convocation on Thursday, March 15 at 8 p.m. in Phelps Stokes Chapel. This event is a part of the Stephenson Memorial Concert Series.

Owens performs soulful, jazzy pieces while conjuring up the spirits of such Motown legends as Marvin Gaye and the Temptations. Growing up as a preacher’s kid in Ferguson, Missouri, Owens was no stranger to the beauty of music. His songs encapsulate his shared love of soul music and humanity. Owens uses his music to engage in conversation with his listeners, build community and share a powerful message about his hometown of Ferguson. A Musical Celebration of Christmas

Berea College Concert Choir at Christmas Concert 2016Christmas is coming and you can celebrate it along with Berea College students. Mark your calendar for December 25 when the Kentucky Educational Television network broadcasts Listen – A Musical Celebration of Christmas at Berea College. This holiday special features a diverse mix of Christmas and holiday music performed by the College’s students and music faculty. The program includes performances by Berea’s Folk Roots Ensemble, Women’s Chorus, Chamber Singers, Concert Choir, Black Music Ensemble and Bluegrass Ensemble, among others. The program also features a Nativity reading from Berea’s newly acquired copy of the St. John’s Bible, the first illuminated Bible published since the invention of the modern printing press. The special program airs Christmas morning on KET2 at 10a.m. Eastern (9 a.m. Central) and on Christmas evening on KET at 8 p.m. Eastern (7 p.m. Central).

Broadcast Dates Announced for WoodSongs Programs Recorded at Berea College

WoodSongs Old-Time Radio Hour LogoThe NPR radio broadcasts of the two WoodSongs performance shows recorded at Berea College in September will be aired locally in November.

The first show, highlighting the U.S. Navy Bluegrass Band “Country Current” and young Parker Hastings, will air on WEKU-FM on Saturday, November 11, at 8 p.m. The second performance, featuring the McLain Family Band’s 50th Anniversary Celebration, will air on WEKU-FM on Saturday, November 18, at 8 p.m. These shows will be broadcast on NPR affiliate WUKY (Lexington) at 10 p.m. on both dates. Concert Choir’s Fall Concert to Feature Classical and Traditional Music

The Berea College Concert Choir and Chamber Singers will present their 2017 fall concert “Bach, Brahms, and Bluegrass” in Gray Auditorium at 3 p.m. on Sunday, November 12. The public is invited to attend, and there is no charge for admission. Stephen Bolster will conduct the choirs. They will be joined by special guest performers the Clavere Piano Duo (Javier and Lindsay Clavere) and the Berea College Bluegrass Ensemble, led by Al White. Julie Nelms Wins 2017 Red Foley Music Award

2017 Red Foley Award winner Julie NelmsJulie Nelms ’17, a senior Appalachian studies major from Robbinsville, North Carolina, won the 2017 Red Foley Music Award. This award, established in memory of Country Music Hall of Fame star Red Foley who attended the Berea Academy, is presented by the Berea College Alumni Association once each academic year to recognize talented Berea students for their musical contributions to the social life of the campus community. Bluegrass Ensemble Spring Concert this Weekend, Mariachi Berea Following Week

The Berea College Bluegrass Ensemble will perform their spring concert April 22, 2017 at 8:00 p.m. in Phelps Stokes Chapel. The concert will also serve as a benefit to promote and support their upcoming European summer tour to Denmark and Ireland. Berea College Welcomes Public to Della Mae

Vibrant Sounds Honoring the Roots

della-maeBerea College welcomes the public and campus community to Vibrant Sounds Honoring the Roots. This program will feature Grammy- nominated music group Della Mae who recently performed on A Prairie Home Companion. This convocation is a part of the Stephenson Memorial Concert Series and is free and open to the public. Thursday, March 17, 2016, at 8:00 p.m. in Phelps Stokes Chapel.

Featuring five female instrumentalists/vocalists, the group formed in 2009, built a fan base with the release of their first album, I Built This Heart, in 2011 and broke through with the release of their 2013 Grammy-nominated album, This World Oft Can Be. In 2015, Della Mae released their self-titled third album.

According to The Bluegrass Situation, “The praise was effusive even before Della Mae was released… The Boston Globe called the album masterful. The New York Times said it showed a leap in confidence. One of the band’s better-known fans, Ed Helms, wrote in the liner notes that the collection of songs stirred his soul and lifted his spirit.” 

The convocation events, which are provided to both the campus and public communities, are a significant part of a student’s educational experience at Berea College. Berea, the South’s first interracial and coeducational college, focuses on learning, labor and service. Berea admits academically promising students, primarily from Appalachia, who have limited economic resources. No student is charged tuition. All students must work at least 10 hours weekly, earning money for books, room and board. Graduates from Berea go on to distinguish themselves and the College in many fields, living out the College’s scriptural motto “God has made of one blood all peoples of the earth (Acts 17:26).
