Special Wish Leads to Special Concert

The bells of Berea College’s carillon rang out with familiar tunes as Marlene Payne, an alumna and former faculty member who taught at the College during the past four decades, presented a special concert to eager listeners. Payne, who graduated from the College in 1961, learned to play the carillon about 10 years ago after taking lessons from John Courter, an internationally known carillonneur and former music professor at Berea College. After Courter’s death in 2010, Payne performed concerts on campus regularly and coordinated visits to Berea by other carillonneurs from all around the U.S. and other nations. Bereans prepare for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Observance

As Martin Luther King, Jr. Day approaches, members of the Berea community are joining with Berea College in preparing activities for this annual observance on Monday, January 18. The crowd will begin assembling at 10:00 a.m. at Union Church for the traditional march, which will start at 10:30 a.m., proceeding to Presser Hall on Chestnut Street. Concert Choir’s Annual Fall Concert on November 8

The Berea College Concert Choir and Chamber Singers, Stephen Bolster conductor, will present their annual fall concert in Gray Auditorium on Sunday afternoon, November 8  at 3:00 p.m.  The public is invited to attend, and there is no charge for admission.  The choirs will be accompanied by Lindsay Clavere on the piano. On July 6, 2012, Ragtime: the musical opened to boisterous applause. The student actors were confident and capable. After a month of rehearsals as well as voice training they had good reason to be.

Concert Choir Presents Annual Fall Concert, Sunday, October 27

The annual fall concert by the Berea College Concert Choir and Chamber Singers, conducted by Dr. Stephen Bolster, will be held on Sunday, October 27 at 3 p.m. in Gray Auditorium on the Berea College campus.  The choral concert will be accompanied by Lindsay Clavere on the piano. Berea College’s Annual Christmas Concert Will Be Performed on December 7 & 8

The annual Christmas Concert, co-sponsored by the Berea College Music Department and the Campus Christian Center, will be held on two consecutive nights this year – Friday evening December 7 and Saturday evening December 8. Both performances will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Union Church. All are invited to attend this popular event and to join in the singing of traditional carols accompanied by College Organist Dr. Javier Clavere. Music of the season will be performed by the college’s Black Music Ensemble, Bluegrass Ensemble, Concert Choir, Chamber Singers, Wind Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble, Clavere Piano Duo, and Women’s Chorus. As patrons arrive, the Megasax Quartet, and the Old-Tyme Ensemble will perform Christmas music beginning thirty minutes before the concert. Plan to attend this joyful candlelit Christmas celebration to usher in Berea’s Christmas Season! A special holiday reception with light refreshments will take place immediately after Friday night’s performance. Dr. Stephen Bolster

Steve and Sandy BolsterDr. Stephen Bolster is the Mary W. McGaw Endowed Chair of Music at Berea College, where he has taught for 32 years. Professor of Music and Program Coordinator, he conducts the Concert Choir and Chamber Singers, and teaches voice, vocal methods, conducting, and music literature. He holds music degrees from Dartmouth College (A.B. Music, 1973), the University of North Carolina (M.M. Choral Arts, 1977), and the University of Colorado (D.M.A. Literature and Performance of Choral Music, 1980) and conducted major choral organizations at each school before joining the Berea faculty in 1980. Under his direction the Berea College Concert Choir and Chamber Singers have toured annually in the eastern United States, and have performed in several cities in China in 2007, in Italy and Switzerland in 2002, and in central and eastern Europe in 1994. The choirs have been featured in several Christmas specials for educational television, have performed multiple times for the Kentucky Music Educators Association State Conference, and have twice performed at the American Negro Spiritual Competition in Cincinnati’s famous Music Hall.
