Called by TIME magazine as an environmental ‘hero,’ Dr. Vandana Shiva, a physicist, philosopher, feminist activist and director of the Navdanya seed-saving network in northern India, will speak at a Berea College Convocation on March 3 at 3:00 p.m. in Phelps Stokes Chapel. Speaking on “Making Peace with the Earth,” Dr. Shiva will discuss the role that women play in preserving the eco-balance of the world’s food system. Dr. Shiva’s visit to Berea is co-sponsored by the Convocations Program and by the Berea College Women’s & Gender Studies department, which is observing its 25th anniversary during 2016. Award-Winning “Proud Citizen” To Be Screened March 31
On Tuesday March 31 at 6:30 p.m., Berea College will host a screening of Thom Southerland’s award-winning 2014 feature film Proud Citizen. The screening will take place at the Loyal Jones Appalachian Center. It is sponsored by Berea’s English Senior Seminar on “Living Literate Lives” as well as Berea’s Film Studies Program and Loyal Jones Appalachian Center. The screening will include a Q&A session with both Thom Southerland and lead actor Katerina Stoykova-Klemer, whose life and work inspired the film. The event is free and open to the community. Local Event to Help Ebola Victims in West Africa
When the Ebola crisis was at its peak last fall, Berea College students determined then to do something about it. Now local residents can, too, by participating in the “Stop Ebola” event on February 1, 2015.
Striving to live out the College’s commitment to learning, labor, and service, and inspired by the passionate plea of Gyude Moore, a Berea College alumnus from Liberia, the students began planning how they could help stem the crisis, even before it reached America’s shores. 5,000 Eighth Graders Begin Their Journey to College
Eighth grade students from across southeastern Kentucky will gather at the Corbin Arena on Wednesday, August 29, for a two-hour college readiness kick-off. Members of the Class of 2017 will celebrate the start of GEAR UP and Berea CFES Scholars programs in their schools. College presidents will show their support through motivational videos, and Berea College President Dr. Lyle Roelofs will welcome the students to the programs. Kentucky Department of Juvenile Justice Commissioner Hasan Davis will advise students that adversity can be overcome through hard work and strength of spirit. There will be musical performances by the Hall Pass Tour and Chad Warrix. Students will have the opportunity to meet their 2017 classmates from other schools participating in two national GEAR UP grant programs being implemented by Berea College. 500 Middle and High Schoolers Will Attend TRIO Day at Berea College
Berea College will host Kentucky’s TRIO Day Celebration this year on Saturday, February 18, 2012, a day Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear declared Kentucky TRIO Day. The event is sponsored by the Kentucky Association of Education Opportunity Program Personnel (KAEOPP). Approximately 500 TRIO Program personnel and students from around the commonwealth will attend and participate in student competitions, speaker presentations and campus tours.
