Berea College partnered with Goodwill Industries of Kentucky for a successful donation drive, collecting 3,237 pounds of donated items from students moving out of residence halls as the spring term ended.
“Sustainability is very important to Berea College, and this donation drive allows students an easy alternative for items no longer needed, saving thousands of items from the landfill. They also get to help others, because items collected support employment services that Goodwill provides in our local community,” said Joan Pauly, Berea College sustainability coordinator.
Items were collected at residence halls across campus April 27 – May 4. Donated items included small appliances, books, towels, bedding, clothing, shoes, lamps and décor, music, movies and other household goods. Goodwill sells donated items to provide jobs and job training and to fund its literacy and workforce development programs for people with disabilities or other barriers to employment.
“It’s exciting to see young people get behind this donation drive, and we appreciate the support of a new generation of donors,” said Erin Gold, vice president of Goodwill’s central Kentucky operations. “Donations help us provide critical employment services for people with disabilities or other challenges to finding and keeping a job.”
