Adria Sutherland, originally from Berea, KY, has had a varied teaching and performance career that has taken her around the world and brought her back home. Prof. Sutherland obtained her Bachelor of Music degree at Morehead State University where she studied under Michael Acord, and her Master of Music degree at East Carolina University, where she studied with Dr. Nathan Williams. Following the completion of her M.M, she moved to New York City to pursue freelancing, and then to Austin, TX to jump into career private lesson teaching.
Prof. Sutherland began her professional performance career at the age of 18, when she was added to the sub list with the Lexington Philharmonic. Since then, she has performed with the National Wind Ensemble in Carnegie Hall (Principal/Soloist), the Camerata New York Orchestra, the Paragon Ragtime Orchestra-NYC (a 12-piece ensemble accompanying silent films), the North Carolina Chamber Orchestra, and various other ensembles. Her experiences have allowed her to perform throughout the continental United States and throughout Italy, Greece, Austria, and Germany. One of her biggest passions is making community music, and she has been an active member and soloist with the Central Kentucky Concert Band in Lexington, KY since 2008, a member of the Madison Community Band in Richmond, KY since 2014, and has performed with the Advocate Brass Band in Danville, KY.
Adria Sutherland has been teaching clarinet privately to all ages and coaching sectionals for top tier schools since 1997. Her students have a proven record of success, having won positions in All-State Bands and Intercollegiate Bands, many earning principal positions. Many schools for whom she coached the clarinets have performed at the MidWest Clinic, the Texas Music Educators Association state conference, and the Kentucky Music Educators In-Service Conference. She has held faculty positions at Asbury College and Transylvania University, and she is currently part of the faculty at Berea College and Georgetown College, where she teaches applied clarinet lessons, applied recorder lessons, and Music Education Courses.
Prof. Sutherland currently resides in Berea, KY with her husband, Greg, and their two beautiful girls, where they run their instrument repair business, Sutherland Music Shoppe.
