Labor Day At Berea College
Since 1921, Labor Day at Berea College has recognized and celebrated the value of student work. In 2011, the day was expanded to reflect a Labor Program that is more intentionally integrated with academics and service. Labor Day now provides the opportunity for all Berea students to explore the intersections of learning, labor, and service through a series of events, workshops and open houses designed to:
- Celebrate “Work Well Done.”
- Explore academic, labor, and service programs at the College.
- Discover and secure placements for summer and academic year labor positions.
- Help first-year students explore area(s) of academic interest and complete the official exploratory area of interest process.
- Help juniors and seniors prepare for life after Berea.
Summer/Fall Labor Positions and Course Registration
Labor Day is an opportunity for students to examine various Labor Departments, interview for jobs with supervisors and potentially secure an upcoming summer and academic year labor position. Students are encouraged to come prepared to discuss their skill-sets and to bring a resume listing their prior work history.
NOTE: All students must secure a labor position in order to register for summer or fall term classes. Limited summer labor positions are first made available to those who enroll in at least one summer class. In order to register for a summer class, students must submit a signed labor status form to the Labor Program Office. During a designated time, Priority Registration for summer will occur with Open Registration continuing after that. Students taking a class will have priority in securing a summer Labor position. At an announced time, any available summer positions not taken by those who register during the designated registration times will be available to those who wish to work without a class in the summer. Once jobs are opened to students to work without classes, special permissions will be needed for any student desiring to register for summer school and add classes to their summer schedule.
