For many low-income teens, higher education seems out of reach the moment they research the cost of a four-year college degree. Consider this – annual tuition at Berea College has a value of $24,000, and the average family income among our students is less than $30,000 per year.
Fortunately, prospective Berea students know up front that cost won’t be a barrier. We intentionally recruit students with high academic promise but limited financial resources from Appalachia and Kentucky, as well as other areas of the United States and the world, to receive our Tuition Promise Scholarships. These scholarships cover the cost of tuition for every student.
High Cost of Many Colleges
The unique model is supported by generous friends, alumni, faculty, staff and students who contribute over $4 million a year in charitable gifts to the Berea Fund. At $2,500 per student, this fund currently meets 9% of their educational costs.
By giving to Berea, you can remove financial barriers for a student who is dedicated to earning higher education. You can open the possibility of a high-quality liberal arts degree for a first-generation college student. You can provide an option to someone who previously thought there were none.
