Martha Redbone Roots Project Quintet

Friday — October 24, 8:00pm
Footworks Percussive Dance Ensemble

There is good reason Berea, Kentucky is the “Folk Arts and Crafts Capital of Kentucky.” Opportunities for folk music and dance abound. Following on the heels of the annual Celebration of Traditional Music (October 16-19) two more performing groups will take the stage of Phelps Stokes Chapel on Thursday and Friday, October 23 and 24, presenting free concerts sponsored by Berea College.

Martha Redbone, accompanied by a five-piece band, is a mesmerizing, award-winning musician who performs a unique blend of roots, blues, and soul music drawing from her Cherokee, Choctaw, Shawnee, African American and Appalachian heritage. Her newest album is a marriage of William Blake’s poetry and the music of Redbone’s Black Mountain, Kentucky roots. Redbone’s performance is presented as a Stephenson Memorial Concert. As part of Berea’s Convocations program, the series was established by the family of the late John B. Stephenson, former president of Berea College, and his sister Nancy Anne Stephenson, to bring outstanding musical performances to Berea College for the enrichment of all, free of charge.

Toes will be tapping at the Footworks Percussive Dance Ensemble’s performance. Picture Riverdance meets Hoedown. The Footworks group combines a bit of urban STOMP, Irish step dancing, African-American stepping and a healthy dose of Appalachian clogging. The Footworks Percussive Dance Ensemble offers a uniquely American story: an exuberant fusion of live music, comedy, singing, and a dazzling array of percussive dance forms rooted in different cultures. Since 1979, Footworks has represented American culture internationally, including a Smithsonian Institution tour of Japan, and as guest artists with Riverdance in London. Footworks’ founder and director Eileen Carson is an NEA Choreography Fellow. They come to Berea fresh from opening for the International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) Awards.
