A belated statement

On June 15th the Supreme Court of the United States released a decision of great significance for the issue of gender justice in our country.  Given how central gender equality is in our mission, we should have released a statement expressing our great appreciation for this important development at that time.  In the press of working on the other crises of the moment, this was overlooked.  I am proud that Berea College today proclaims…

Statement on Supreme Court Ruling Protecting LGBTQ+ Members in the Workplace

We are heartened by the recent Supreme Court ruling that the 1964 Civil Rights Act protects members of the LGBTQ+ community from discrimination in the workplace based on sexual orientation and gender identity. At Berea College, we are guided by the motto, “God has made of one blood all peoples of the earth.” That all-encompassing scripture from Acts 17:26 implies that we are all equal, giving no consideration to race, gender, ethnicity, economic status, religion or sexual orientation. The Court’s ruling affirms our commitment to employees and provides another level of security in the workplace. June is Pride month, and yesterday, June 28, was the 50th anniversary of the first Pride march, held on the one-year anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising. We, indeed, are of one blood.

Prayer*

Gracious God,

During this time of uncertainty, anxiety, and loss, may we cherish our blessings and help us to cultivate a posture of gratitude. Instill in us a calming peace that

in the face of such grief, we may be grateful that You are with us. Amen.

“The Place I Want To Get Back To” by Mary Oliver

The place I want to get back to
is where
in the pinewoods
in the moments between
the darkness
and first light
two deer
came walking down the hill
and when they saw me
they said to each other, okay,
this one is okay,
let’s see who she is
and why she is sitting
on the ground like that,
so quiet,
as if asleep, or in a dream,
but, anyway, harmless;
and so they came
on their slender legs
and gazed upon me
not unlike the way
I go out to the dunes and look
and look and look
into the faces of the flowers;
and then one of them leaned forward
and nuzzled my hand, and what can my life
bring to me that could exceed
that brief moment?
For twenty years
I have gone every day to the same woods,
not waiting, exactly, just lingering.
Such gifts, bestowed,
can’t be repeated.
If you want to talk about this come to visit.
I live in the house near the corner,
which I have named
Gratitude.

Stay safe,
Lyle Roelofs, President
