Speech and Debate Team
Members of Berea’s Speech and Debate Team compete in intercollegiate tournaments throughout the southeast and Midwest regions.
During the 2014-2015 academic year, we competed in eight tournaments and won over 110 individual and team awards.
Berea’s team also houses the Debate for Democracy National Championship from 2008 and 2009 and finalists from 2010, 2012, and 2013. Project Pericles sponsors the Debate for Democracy.
Berea students compete in parliamentary style debate (team debate) as well as international public debate (solo debate). Speech team members also perform in individual events, both interpretation and speaking in nature.
Since 2003, Berea has hosted its own tournament, The John G. Fee Memorial, which offers IPDA, NPDA debate, the standard AFA sanctioned individual events, plus Radio Broadcasting and Impromptu Counseling .
Team membership is open to all students, regardless of previous experience, and they may receive credit for participating if they register for COM 103: Forensics Practicum. Contact the director of forensics, Dr. Billy Wooten, at (859) 985-3762 for more details.
