Summer Abroad Scholarships and Grants
Through the generosity of alumni and friends of the college who value international education, several endowed scholarships and grants provide financial support for Berea students to participate in Summer Abroad programs, including Berea International Summer Term (BIST), KEI, and KIIS. This funding is awarded on a competitive basis.
Students participating in an approved summer program abroad may be awarded one of the following:
New Horizons Grant
The New Horizons Grant is awarded to sophomores, juniors, and seniors participating in an education abroad program of at least three weeks in length. New Horizons Grants provide a variable level of support but may cover up to one-third of the total cost of a BIST course or up to 25% of other programs.
John B. Stephenson Scholarship for Non-Western Study
The John B. Stephenson Scholarship for Non-Western Study is awarded to a limited number of outstanding juniors and seniors participating in an education abroad program in Africa or Asia. The program must be at least four weeks in length, and the applicant cannot previously have studied, traveled at length, or lived in the proposed country. The Stephenson Non-Western Scholarship is awarded in place of a New Horizons Grant and may cover up to 40% of the total cost.
Qualified applicants may be awarded one of the following in place of New Horizons or Stephenson Non-Western:
Carlisle Keller Macdonald Scholarship
Mrs. Carlisle Keller Macdonald, Class of 1938, established the Macdonald Fund for Study Abroad to encourage students to enrich their education at Berea through an academic program abroad. Macdonald Scholarships are awarded to a limited number of participants in Berea International Summer Term courses and KEI or KIIS summer programs. Applicants must have a 3.3 GPA or higher and great financial need, and must be studying abroad for the first time at Berea.
Boyd and Gaynell Fowler International Scholarship
The Boyd and Gaynell Fowler International Scholarship is awarded to students with great financial need from Buchanan County, Virginia, or nearby counties (Dickenson, Russell and Tazewell counties in Virginia; Pike County in Kentucky; and McDowell and Mingo counties in West Virginia). The Fowler Scholarship is awarded in addition to a New Horizons Grant or Stephenson Non-Western Scholarship, or funding for a Fall or Spring Term abroad.
Qualified applicants may be awarded this final grant in addition to other summer grants.
Albright and Shinn Grants
The Albright and Shinn Grants provide assistance to students with great financial need who are studying abroad for the first time at Berea. The amount awarded is variable but generally will not be more than $250. The Albright and Shinn Grants are awarded in addition to a New Horizons Grant or Stephenson Non-Western Scholarship.*
