China is one of the foundational civilizations of the world. It is also currently home to over 1.35 billion people and the second largest economy in the world. Its global significance is difficult to overstate, but in the West the challenges China faces are often shrouded by misunderstandings of communism and China’s unique historical development. Through an extended stay in Yunnan Province and travels to Shanghai, Xi’an and Beijing, (underpinned by careful observation, language lessons, reading and written reflection), students will develop their own understanding of the political and social challenges of living in the presence of an active cultural heritage that is over five thousand years old.
Financial support from Berea College is available for any major to cover a portion of the cost of a summer abroad. The Department of Foreign Languages offers similar financial support for qualified majors and minors. Find out more information on how to obtain financial support.
