Berea College, founded in 1855, began when the area around it was only a village. As the College grew, the town grew and, in 1890, the community was incorporated.
The City of Berea has a current population of some 10,000, and, in 1988, was designated the “Arts and Crafts Capital of Kentucky.” The designation has its roots at the College, which long has been known for its tradition of producing and preserving the handcrafts of Southern Appalachia.
