Personal Statement

I just completed my 30th year of teaching at this remarkable school and I have found my time at Berea College to be both rewarding and personally fulfilling.  I have mentored 15 summer undergraduate research projects with 67 students.  My research interest over the last 30 years has been in the area of Parasitology with a focus on several trematodes (i.e., flatworm parasites) that infect snails, fresh water mussels and fish.  We have been investigating both physiological and ecological principles associated with the cycling of these parasites in aquatic systems. Information acquired from these studies has relevance to trematode pathogens of humans. Berea students have presented oral talks and research posters related to this work at a variety of state and regional meetings, and are co-authors on 18 professional peer-reviewed papers.

I am a firm believer in hands-on activities in the courses that I teach.  Some 20 years ago I became part of a national effort National Science Foundation initiative called Research Link 2000 which promoted such experiences for students. This experience completely transformed the manner by which I teach my classes.  Actively engaging with material in laboratory and field settings has become a high priority in my teaching pedagogy.
