Summer Reunion 2018 Highlights

Summer Reunion 2018 Header

At Summer Reunion 2018, we celebrated the special reunion classes of 1943, 1948, 1953, 1958, 1963, 1968, 1973, and 1978 through 1988. More than 500 alumni and guests came back to campus for this fun-filled weekend, June 8-10.

party of the decade

Alums dance through the night during the Party of the Decade.

For the first time, we threw the Party of the Decade in The Garden behind Boone Tavern. While all classes were welcome (and encouraged) to attend, this new event was especially for the classes of 1978 through 1988 — who showed up in record numbers for this year’s Summer Reunion! Alums enjoyed snacking on a nacho bar and soft pretzels while reconnecting with classmates and dancing through the night with the help of DJ Jadyn Sol (Jordan Sims ’15). Leading up to the event, alums submitted hundreds of song requests for the ultimate 70s-80s mix tape!

50th reunion breakfast at President's Home

The Class of ’68 celebrated its 50th reunion with a breakfast hosted by Pres. Lyle and First Lady Laurie Roelofs in the President’s Home. Class members were inducted into the Charles T. Morgan Society, named after 1923 alumnus Charles T. Morgan who served as the second secretary of the Alumni Association, a position now known as the Associate Vice President for Alumni Relations. Each alum in attendance received a specially designed piece from Woodcraft bearing the society’s seal.

Jim Branscome ’68, Lavoyed Hudgins receive alumni awards

Jim Branscome ’68 and Lavoyed Hudgins were presented with the Distinguished Alumnus Award and the Honorary Alumnus Award, respectively, during the College’s Summer Reunion Alumni Awards Presentation on Saturday, June 9 in the Boone Tavern Event Center. Their stories will appear in the Summer 2018 Berea College Magazine, scheduled to be in homes in August. Learn more about each recipient.

2nd Town Hall Forum with Pres. Lyle Roelofs

During Homecoming 2017, Pres. Lyle Roelofs hosted his first Town Hall Forum, which streamed live on the Berea College Facebook page. The event was so well-attended and engaging, we brought it back for Summer Reunion 2018 and plan to make it a tradition at every Homecoming and Summer Reunion. Emceed by former Student Alumni Council president Kelley Farley ’18, Pres. Roelofs and a panel of vice presidents answered question from those in attendance, from our social media audience on Facebook Live and from those submitted prior to the event. Submit a Question for Pres. Roelofs at Homecoming 2018 and view past forums.

We threw a Zero-Waste Summer Reunion

We hosted our first Zero-Waste Homecoming in November 2017 – the first of its kind in Kentucky! With the help of our alumni and the Berea College Office of Sustainability, we diverted 90% of our waste from the landfill. Our goal is to make every event an Zero-Waste event. Read more about our zero-waste commitment.
