Dr. Maraina Miles is a Visiting Assistant Professor of Geology serving as a one-year sabbatical replacement for Dr. Suzanne Birner. She teaches courses in introductory geology, glacial geology, and geomorphology. Before coming to Berea, Dr. Miles finished her PhD in glacial geology at the University of Maine. There, she studied the history of both the Antarctic and Laurentide ice sheets. Her studies have taken her to remote places, such as Antarctica and Tierra del Fuego, Chile.
Before pursing a career as a geologist, Dr. Miles went to school for studio art, getting a B.F.A focusing in contemporary sculpture and ceramics in 2013. While in Berea, Dr. Miles hopes to find ways to combine her interests in both art and geology.
