About the Department
Women's studies is an important field of inquiry
that arose from the effort to understand gender roles and women's
historic struggle for justice throughout the world. In the interdisciplinary
WST curriculum, students develop the ability to examine the cultural
construction of gender, and exercise a feminist critique of dominant
power relationships in the global community (familial, social,
economic, and political).
The Office of Women's Studies organizes seminars,
workshops, and lectures to enable faculty, staff, and students
to learn about current developments in feminist scholarship. "Peanut
Butter and Gender" is a regular luncheon lecture series on
issues of gender and culture. Distinguished scholars visit campus
throughout the year. The Women's History Month Committee works
with the Office of Women's Studies to plan campus-wide events in
celebration of women's scholarship during the month of March.
Why Study Women's
Studies?
Women's studies majors have the opportunity
to directly apply their knowledge in the framework of an internship,
independent study, or a labor position as program assistant to
women's studies.
