Woodcraft

Woodcraft In the late 19th century, Berea benefited from the natural timber resources of the Appalachians as a “college and lumber mill town”. Berea College Crafts put these resources to use, and the Woodcraft program emerged from utilitarian beginnings as an early cabinetry program. The Woodcraft shop provided tables, chairs, and other furniture needs for College facilities. Since the early 20th century the Woodcraft program has produced wooden puzzles and games, baskets, seagrass stools, candleholders, and furniture. Woodcraft design at Berea College features Appalachian, Shaker and Colonial American styles. In its infancy the program was heavily influenced by famed furniture collector and author, Wallace M. Nutting, whose collection remains on display today at the Log House Craft Gallery.
