Wood Studio

Woodcraft In the late 19th century, Berea benefited from the natural timber resources of the Appalachians as a “college and lumber mill town”. Berea College Crafts put these resources to use, and the Wood Studio emerged from utilitarian beginnings as an early cabinetry program. The Wood Studio provided tables, chairs, and other furniture needs for College facilities. Since the early 20th century the Wood Studio program has produced wooden puzzles and games, baskets, seagrass stools, candleholders, and furniture. Wood Studio designs at Berea College feature Traditional, Transitional, Appalachian, Shaker and Colonial American styles. Current design and production methods allow for individual custom work to be completed for any client. In its infancy the program was heavily influenced by famed furniture collector and author, Wallace M. Nutting, whose collection remains on display today at the Log House Craft Gallery.
