Dr.
Boyd is the chair of the Berea College Sociology Department.
He received his B.A. from Wabash College (1964), his Master
of Social Sciences from The Institute of Social Studies in
The Hague (1968), and his Ph.D. in Sociology from Cambridge
University, The United Kingdom (1976).
Dr. Boyd's fields of
study include applied sociology, socio-economic development,
community analysis, and social
problems. He also teaches introductory sociology and
sociological theory. Starting out as a Peace Corps volunteer
(1964)
in the early days of the program, he has had an interest
in Third World development throughout his career and
has worked in development and/or education programs in Colombia,
Peru, Ghana, Zambia, and The People's Republic of China.
His current research interest has been social change
in
the rural communities of Appalachia.
Impressed by the
long history of Berea College as a force for social change
in America Dr. Boyd, a native Kentuckian,
joined the faculty in 1977. The Great Commitments, the
student labor program, and an admissions policy directing
students of great promise and limited economic resources
to his classes are all things that he values here.
He
includes among his accomplishments the daily practice of
Tai Chi Chuan, past membership in the Berea Volunteer
Fire Department, and a developing effort to engage in
sustainable agriculture on a small mountain farm.
