Ecological
renovations are underway or planned for many buildings on the Berea
College campus including Draper Hall, the College's largest classroom
and office facility. By optimizing the use of natural lighting,
cross ventilation, high performance windows, solar hot water heaters,
and other appropriate technologies, energy use will be reduced
by two-thirds, while use comfort is increased. Reductions in energy
use campus-wide are linked to the College's planned replacement
of its coal-fired heating plant with a more sustainable system.
Draper Hall Renovations
Design development was completed in 2001. This renovation of the campus' historic main building was aimed at improving
environmental performance and creating new user-friendly layouts
Bruce-Trades Building Renovations
Design development was completed in 2001. This new entry atrium was created to serve as a dynamic commons space. Ecological
consulting was also conducted on the renovation of existing buildings.
Energy Master Plan
Research / Analysis Phase began in 2001. This represents the early stages of a multi-year project to assess the College's
energy needs and redesign the energy system to meet these needs
in a sustainable way.
