The Campus Environmental Policy Committee (CEPC) monitors the
progress of Berea College toward ecological sustainability- the
ability to meet current needs without degrading the natural systems
and resources required to meet future needs- and recommends policies
and actions that will promote progress toward ecological sustainability.
Responsibilities of the CEPC:
Develop a method for measuring the progress of Berea College
toward ecological sustainability.
Overseeing the preparation,
at least bi-annually, of a report assessing the College’s
progress toward ecological sustainability.
Identifying opportunities
for linkages between actions taken to increase the ecological
sustainability of the campus, and
the efforts of the SENS Program and others to increase the
awareness and understanding of students, faculty, and staff
of environmental
issues and pathways toward sustainability.
Current CEPC projects:
Design of sustainability
indicators for Berea College
An indicator is something that
helps you understand where you are, which way
you are going and how far you are from where you want to be.
Indicators of sustainability help a community to measure its
progress towards sustainability, and to design policies to
increase progress. Indicators are often linked to the three themes
of
economic, social and environmental sustainability.
The most
effective role of the CEPC in the college land-use decisions made
by the College
The College can utilize its
land holding
to retain greenspace, increase recreational opportunities,
protect wildlife habitat and stream corridors, and encourage
conservation
of “production” land use (agriculture, wildlife,
forestry, etc.). Berea College commits to adopting land use
policies that promote the no-net loss of ecological function
and will
pursue if practical the placement of permanent conservation
easements on portions of farm and forest land.
The CEPC is
composed of two elected members of the Teaching and General
Faculty, the Director of the Sustainability and
Environmental Studies (SENS) Program, the Vice President
for Business and Administration,
the Compton Chair in Ecological Design, the Director of Facilities
Management, and two students designated by members of the
Committee. The committee should call on other members of the campus
community
for necessary expertise not represented on the Committee
itself. To encourage continuity, one of the faculty members will
serve
a three-year term. Once these initial membership terms expire,
all subsequent members who are elected will serve three-year
terms.
