History of the Academy
The first Public Safety Officer Training Academy was conducted
in 1991. An organized group of Public Safety Directors within
the Association of Independent Kentucky Colleges and Universities
saw the need to establish professional training for public safety
officers. Issues concerning liability of colleges in relationship
to training of personnel, increased regulations initiated by
governmental agencies such as the Environmental Protection Agency
(EPA) and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA),
and the Campus Security Act of 1992 have illustrated the need
for this type of training. Well-trained, professional safety
and security staff are a necessity on college campuses. The Public
Safety Officer Training Academy is designed to assist colleges
and universities in meeting these training needs. The success
of the Academy has led us to offer it to schools throughout the
country.
Who
Should Attend?
Safety officers, safety committee members, security officers, campus
police officers, administrators, physical plant directors, risk

and security benefit from this program.
