Officer Training Academy

History of the Academy
The first Public Safety Officer Training Academy was conducted in 1991. An organized group of Public Safety Directors within the Association of Independent Kentucky Colleges and Universities saw the need to establish professional training for public safety officers. Issues concerning liability of colleges in relationship to training of personnel, increased regulations initiated by governmental agencies such as the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and the Campus Security Act of 1992 have illustrated the need for this type of training. Well-trained, professional safety and security staff are a necessity on college campuses. The Public Safety Officer Training Academy is designed to assist colleges and universities in meeting these training needs. The success of the Academy has led us to offer it to schools throughout the country.

Who Should Attend?
Safety officers, safety committee members, security officers, campus police officers, administrators, physical plant directors, risk managers and anyone whose duties includes responsibility for safety, loss prevention or security programs on college campuses should attend this training. Persons whose responsibilities include OSHA and EPA regulations, fire safety and legal issues related to safety and security benefit from this program.

Location and Dates
The Academy will be held on the Berea College campus in Berea, Kentucky. Berea is located 35 miles south of Lexington on Interstate 75. Registration will begin Sunday, June 4 at 12:30 p.m. in the Commons Room at the Woods-Penniman building. Food and refreshments will be served, and participants will have a chance to get acquainted. Course work, beginning with the 1:00-6:00 p.m. Sunday session, will be a combination of classroom instruction and hands-on exercises (such as fire suppression and building inspections). Classroom instruction will be held in the spacious Commons area of the Woods-Penniman building. Classes will end on Thursday, June 8, 2006.

Accommodations
Participants can take advantage of a special room agreement with Boone Tavern Inn by making reservations and payments through our Public Safety office. The discount rate is $55 (including tax) per room for two persons sharing a double room or for one person in a single room. Again, early registration will ensure the arrangements. There are also a number of other motels in the area listed in the Berea brochure.

All food for the event is included in cost of the program, including dinner and music/comedy show at Renfro Valley, steak cookout at Indian Fort Theater and other samplings from local food establishments.
