3-16-09

Colman McCarthy, former writer for the Washington Post, and a long-time peace activist will speak this Thursday at 3 p.m. at Berea College on “How to be a Peacemaker.”   The Convocation in Phelps Stokes Auditorium is the annual Robbins Peace Lecture sponsored by the Campus Christian Center.  Admission is free and open to the public.
McCarthy, in addition to being a syndicated columnist, is a lecturer, educator and peace activist.  He is the Founder and Director of the non-profit Center for Teaching Peace in Washington D.C., which helps schools establish peace studies programs.  He has been teaching courses and lecturing on nonviolence and the literature of peace for decades.  The purpose of the courses is to expose students to the philosophy of pacifism and the methods of nonviolent conflict resolution.  McCarthy has authored seven books and has edited two additional works on topics that include peacemaking and his experiences in life.

McCarthy graduated with a B.S.  from Spring Hill College, and holds five additional honorary degrees from St. John’s University, Wheeling Jesuit College, Belmont College, Walsh University, and Spring Hill College.
