Berea College men’s basketball alumni – now high school coaches – will square off for the first “High School Coaches Challenge” on Saturday, Nov. 22 at Berea’s Seabury Center arena.
Five area high school boys’ teams coached by the former Mountaineers will play scrimmages starting at 2:30 p.m. up to the regularly scheduled Berea College Mountaineer game against St. Catherine College which begins at 7:30.
Admission is $3, with all proceeds going to Berea College Athletics Department student programs.
The coaches are all former players of NAIA Hall of Fame Coach Roland Wierwille who will be attending the event. Wierwille, who coached the Mountaineers from 1972 – 2002, won 460 games and took Mountaineer teams to the national tournament five times, including three consecutive appearances from 1998-2000. He was named Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (KIAC) Coach of the Year five times.
Schools and their coaches include Henry Clay High School in Lexington, coached by Berea grad Daniel Brown (class of 1996); Owen County High School, coached by Devin Duvall (class of 2000); North Laurel High School, coached by Jim Conway (class of 1996); Seven Hills High, Cincinnati, Ohio, coached by Willie Hill (class of 1990); and Grant County High School, coached by Ron Kinmon (class of 1993).
