The Berea College Community Choir, Stephen Bolster, conductor, will perform a concert on Sunday afternoon, November 23 in Gray Auditorium at 3 p.m. Admission is free.
The concert will begin with a group of sacred works from different countries and different musical eras, including Cantate Domino by Hans Leo Hassler, the Messe Basse pour voix des femmes by Gabriel Fauré, and two hymn settings by Ralph Vaughan Williams in honor of the 50th Anniversary of his death. The program will continue with arrangements of well-known American folk hymns, Simple Gifts and My Shepherd Will Supply My Need. Following will be a group of folk songs from Ireland, including the famous Johnny, I Hardly Knew Ye and individual folk songs from Scotland and the southeastern United States. Two classic American songs by Jerome Kern and Ira Gershwin will close the concert—Long Ago and Far Away, and Clap Yo’ Hands.
The 30-voice mixed choir includes members of the Berea College administration, faculty, staff, emeritus faculty, alumni, and their spouses. The choir was founded five years ago by Stephen Bolster, with the goal of bringing administration, faculty, and staff of Berea College together in a spirit of community to create and share beautiful choral music. The choir is accompanied on the piano by Harriet Bromley and the organ by John Courter. |
