Berea College Concert Choir and Chamber Singers performing annual fall concert Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 15 and 16

11/10/08

The Berea College Concert Choir and Chamber Singers, Stephen Bolster, conductor, will present two performances of their annual fall concert on Saturday, Nov. 15 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 16 at 3 p.m. in Gray Auditorium, located in Presser Music Building on the Berea College Campus.  The choirs will be accompanied by Ryan Shirar on the piano.  Admission is free.

The concert will open with three sacred pieces performed by the Concert Choir –two contrasting songs about the light of God, and a setting of Psalm 150 for percussion ensemble and choir.   The balance of the first half contains two sets of Gypsy songs by the 12-voice Chamber Singers.  The first set is Johannes Brahms’ famous Zigeunerlieder, Op. 103, for piano and voices, sung in German.  The second is Mario Castelnuovo’s Romancero Gitano, for solo classical guitar and voices, sung in Spanish. The piece will feature guitarist Marty Edwards, a graduating senior music major.   Both works feature solo vocal quartets as well as choir singing.

Following a brief intermission, the second half of the program consists primarily of sets of folk songs from around the world:  Canadian folk songs, British Folk Songs, including famous arrangements of Greensleeves and Loch Lomond by Ralph Vaughan Williams, and Appalachian Folk Songs, including Down By the Riverside and Old Dan Tucker.

The small ensemble from the Concert Choir will perform The Way You Look Tonight and All the Things You Are, musical theatre songs by Jerome Kern, one of America’s most beloved composers, and the entire choir will sing Shut de Do, a lively Jamaican sacred folk song.
