The Berea College Art Department is pleased to announce the opening of Appalachia USA: Photographs by Builder Levy. This extraordinary exhibition of black and white photographs, which opened in Upper and Lower Traylor Galleries of the Rogers-Traylor Art Building on Sunday, documents Levy’s decades-long engagement with the Appalachian region. 
Levy’s work focuses on “ the life of the people and their enduring humanity, but now more than ever, on their mountains, whose fate affects them so intrinsically.” In the tradition of photographers such as Walker Evans, Lewis Hine and Doris Ulmann, Levy’s photographs capture life in the coal towns of Appalachia – destruction of the natural environment, heartbreaking poverty and backbreaking work. At the same time, his images reflect the foundation upon which Appalachia rests – tradition, home and family.
Wednesday, Oct. 8, Levy will be at Berea for a gallery talk and reception beginning at 7 p.m. in the Traylor Galleries.
Appalachia USA will be open through November 16, 2008. This exhibition has been made possible by a generous gift from James and Hanna Bartlett.
Admission is to Berea’s Art Department galleries is free. The galleries are in the Rogers-Traylor Art Building located at the corner of Chestnut and Ellipse Streets.
