“Cultural Identity and Community Engagement” is topic of talk May 1 at Berea College

Author and teacher Dr. Stephanie Y. Evans will share her observations and personal reflections from more than 10 years of working with community service and service-learning in a talk at Berea College, Thursday, May 1.   

In the 3 p.m. program in Phelps Stokes Chapel, Evans will speak on “Cultural Identity and Community Engagement:  Service, Partnership, or Community-Building?”

Evans teaches Women’s and African American Studies at the University of Florida and recently published a book on the history of African American women in academe “Black Women in the Ivory Tower.”  She also is co-editing a book titled “African Americans and Community Engagement in Higher Education.”  She’s taught service-learning courses at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst and was the Assistant Director for Youth Education Programs in the Swearer Center for Public Service at Brown University.
