On Nov. 28, Berea College students, faculty and local community partners involved in fall term service-learning courses will be coming together to share their experiences in service-learning.  The open house style event will showcase collaborations between College and community through academic courses.

The projects that will be highlighted represent a variety of academic disciplines and community organizations. For example, students in an Abnormal Psychology course worked with the Berea Community Schools to organize and carry out two awareness fairs titled “Healthy Minds 2007,” to share information on issues of mental health for high school and middle school students. Students in a Spanish course partnered with a variety of local social service agencies to provide tutoring, translating and interpretation services.

The Service-Learning Course Expo will take place in Baird Lounge in the Alumni Building on the Berea College Campus from 4-6 p.m. on Wednesday Nov. 28. The event is free and open to the public and includes lights refreshments.

Service-learning is the collaborative partnership between college and community.  By working with community organizations and community leaders, college students apply their academic knowledge and critical thinking skills to address community issues.  Upon completing the service, the students reflect upon and assess the project in order to come to a deeper understanding of the course content and civic engagement.
